A Little Bit of History

The Barton Photographic Club started on Tuesday 13th February 1981.

at this time Albert Sykes was a member of Hewitts Camera Club in Grimsby.

The Club was beginning to lose a lot of members and interest was being lost so it was decided to close.

Albert thought that if he could generate enough interest in Barton and the surrounding area it would save him having to travel into Grimsby or Scunthorpe.

So, an advertisement was put together and duplicated 30 times, these were then placed at various places around the town, also at New Holland, Barrow-upon-Humber, Goxhill and South Ferriby.

He also sent a form to Radio Humberside. The then Barton Star weekly Newspaper sent a reporter around to see Albert. They wanted to know what we hoped to do and put a report on the front page on the paper.

The first meeting had a good response with 22 interested people.

They tried to cover most things Photographic, such as Portrait, still life, close-up, landscape, night photography, sport, and architecture and with tips on how to use your camera.

They had visiting Speakers, Nights out, Competitions, Friendly Battles, Slide Shows and Digital Audio-Visual Shows.

The only thing the club was not able to supply was a dark room. At that time a couple of the members were willing to let others use theirs, although with the onset of Digital Photography that is no longer a problem.

The club met every Tuesday evening at 8.00pm at

The Queens, Queens Street, Barton upon Humber,

apart from 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year.

Everyone was Welcome.

Very few things have changed since those days we still take photographs have competitions, workshops, speakers and welcome new members to our weekly meetings although we have changed the night to a Wednesday evening at 7:30pm, and our venue is now at the
Corn Exchange Club (upstairs) 8 Market Place, Barton upon Humber
